Relevant resources for different social work topics.

The Social Welfare Portal at the British Library allows searching and access (much free, apart from journal articles - use Goldsmiths catalogue or Senate House for access) to key UK resources in the areas of: children and families, older adults, disabilities, minority groups, community development and regeneration, welfare benefits, social services, offenders and the criminal justice systems. Items include: UK government reports, journal articles and reports from research organisations including NACRO, Demos and Barnardos.

Economic and Social Research Council

- an independent non-political body which supports research in housing, social care and social policy. Contains several hundred research summaries. You can sign up to receive their weekly publications list.

- The King's Fund is an independent charitable foundation whose goal is to improve health, especially in London.

- hosts a database of published material on all aspects of autism, open for everyone to access on the web. It lists over 24000 published research papers, books, articles and other materials. - search engine managed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Designed for NHS staff but useful in wider health and social care. Full text journal articles may require subscriptions but there are many links to full text reports and guidelines.

- organisation working towards achieving justice and equality by informing, educating and empowering women on their legal rights.

- established in 1968 working against social injustice and racial discrimination.

- major resource centre for Social Care information.

- from SCIE. Nearly 100 online videos on various topics. Can be used in presentations and training. With suggested support materials.

- formerly Putting People First. Now a new sector-wide partnership for transforming adult social care consisting of over 30 national and umbrella organisations representing interest in personalisation and community-based support.

- a database of freely available British and Irish Public Legal Information. It also includes reports from the European Courts of Justice and Human Rights and links to international legal material.

- Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service.

- peer reviewed, multidisciplinary e-journal produced by the Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth at the University of Sheffield includes: sociology, anthropology, education, geography, psychology, social policy and social welfare.

- the NCB promotes the interests and well-being of all children and young people across every aspect of their lives.

- National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

UK charity working exclusively on issue of elder abuse.

- a charity established in response to the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. One of the leading organisations seeking to address the problems facing the Traveller and Gypsy community.

- at Oxford University aims to build knowledge and understanding of the causes and effects of forced migration in order to help improve the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable people.

- in Sydenham, London SE26 which, as part of its mission to promote and provide hospice care of the highest standard for all, has an Education Centre with an extensive library accessible to researchers by appointment.
