VLeBooks, ProQuest Ebook Central and EBSCO allow you to add annotations to ebooks including bookmarks, notes and highlighting text.
We recommended using the “Read Online” version of an ebook to retain your annotations. Please see the platform-specific guides below.
If you wish to annotate a downloaded ebook on Adobe Digital Editions, please see Adobe’s guide here. Please note that once your ebook loan expires, your annotations will no longer be accessible and will not be transferred to a new download of the same ebook unless you take additional steps to restore the annotations.
All your bookmarks, notes and highlighted text are saved in the “Annotations” section in the left sidebar. You also have the option to export your annotations or share your notes with another user (clicking “share” will generate a code that you can give to another user to enter in the “import” box to view your notes).

Your annotated books will not automatically be saved to your bookshelf, so it is good practice to add the title to a bookshelf, so you easily locate annotated books later. Click “Add to Bookshelf” on the book’s main page.

The interface for annotation features is slightly different depending on whether the ebook is in EPUB or PDF format.
Adding Bookmarks
The bookmarking icon is an image of a flag.
For EPUB ebooks, click the image of a flag in the left page margin.

For PDF ebooks, select the image of a flag that will appear when you move your cursor over the top right corner of a page or select “Annotations” from the left sidebar and click “Bookmark” which will add a flag to the current page.

Adding Notes
The “notes” icon is an image of a square with the corner folded over.
For EPUB ebooks, select some text and right-click, click the “Add Note” icon. A box will pop up where you may enter your text.

For PDF ebooks, to add notes to a selection of text, click the “Text Selection” icon (image of an arrow) on the top toolbar and select the text that you wish to annotate. This will bring up a pop up from which you can select the “Add Notes” icon which will bring up a window from where you can add and save notes. Once saved, this will then highlight the originally selected text in yellow and add the image of a small yellow note to the page to indicate that there are notes attached.

Alternatively, to add notes which refer to an entire page, select the “Annotations” icon (image of a square with a pencil) on the left toolbar and then “Notes”. This will bring up a window from where you can add and save notes.

Highlighting Text
For EPUB ebooks, select some text and right-click to access the highlighting feature.

For PDF ebooks, select the “Text Selection” icon on the top menu (image of an arrow), select the text you want to highlight and choose one of the coloured highlighters.

Your annotated books are automatically saved to your bookshelf on Ebook Central.

In the Online Reader, annotations are saved under the star icon which will either be located on the left menu (for PDFs) or top menu (for EPUBs).

The interface for annotation features is slightly different depending on whether the ebook is in EPUB or PDF format.
