eBooks: ProQuest Ebook Central

A guide to using the library's eBook collections.

ProQuest Ebook Central

The majority of the library’s eBooks are provided via ProQuest Ebook Central. 

You can access these through Library Search or via the ProQuest Ebook Central website  Some eBooks are available for download; others are only available to read online.

If you are off-campus you will be taken to the following Goldsmiths login screen.

You will need to log in using your campus username and password (i.e. the password you use for email and the VLE).

After logging in you will be usually be taken straight into the eBook in read online mode.

Read Online mode

In Read Online mode you can scroll between pages using the right and left arrows at the top right of the page. You can also navigate within the book by clicking on the TOC (table of contents) options on the left hand side of the screen, using the Search option to find a particular word or phrase, or by typing a page number into the “Go to page” box. The magnifying glass +/- buttons in the top right hand corner can be used to zoom in and out.

Printing from ProQuest Ebook Central eBooks

ProQuest Ebook Central Read Online mode will allow you to print a limited proportion of the eBook by clicking on the printer icon on the right hand side of the screen and creating a PDF document. A window will open displaying your print allowance for that book. You can then enter the page range you wish to print, open the PDF document and print via your browser or Adobe Acrobat.

Using the notes feature on ProQuest Ebook Central

In order to use the notes feature on ProQuest Ebook Central you need to be signed in. Click on the option in the top right of the screen. You will then be signed in automatically or prompted to login using your campus username and password.

Once you are logged in you will be able to use the “Add/ note" feature. There is an option to print your saved notes.

 

Downloading ProQuest Ebook Central eBooks on a PC or MAC

Not all ProQuest Ebook Central eBooks are available to download. If an eBook is available for download, you will see a “Full Download” button in the “Book Details” panel.

Before downloading you will need to install a program called Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, and create a free account called Adobe ID when prompted. Adobe Digital Editions can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html

Please note: When using a laptop or desktop PC or Mac you will not be able to download Adobe Digital Editions from Google Play or the App Store.

Once you have installed Adobe Digital Editions you can click on the “Download Book” option. A pop-up screen will appear asking what type of device you are using. Choose the correct option and click continue.

On the next screen you may be prompted to download Adobe Digital Editions. If you have already done this click on ‘Done with this step’.

The next screen will display the loan length and format options. Choose EPUB or PDF format and click download. The downloaded eBook should automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions. If this does not happen launch Adobe Digital Editions, click “File / Add to Library” and find the eBook within your computer’s downloads.

Please note: It is not possible to print or copy from the downloaded version of a ProQuest Ebook Central eBook. 

Using ProQuest Ebook Central on an iOS or Android device

Not all ProQuest Ebook Central eBooks are available to download. If an eBook is available for download, you will see a “Full Download” button in the “Book Details” panel.

Before downloading, you will need to install an app called Bluefire Reader, and create an Adobe ID when prompted. Bluefire Reader can be downloaded from the Apple App Store (iOS) or the Google Play Store (Android). 

Once you have installed Bluefire you can click on the “Download Your Book” option. Your device will ask you to choose what program to open the eBook in: choose Bluefire Reader.

If this does not happen automatically go into your device’s downloads folder and open the file in Bluefire Reader.

You will be prompted to create an Adobe ID account, or enter your login details if you already have an Adobe ID. Your eBook will then open in BlueFire Reader.

Ebook Rentals on Proquest Ebook Central

You may request rentals of ebooks that the library does not already own on Proquest Ebook Central.

Log in with your Goldsmiths username and password.

You can search for ebooks by title or keywords or you may browse titles by subject.

Ebooks that are available for rental will be marked as “Available on request”.

Click on the title of the ebook.

You will see the option to either “read this book” for 5 minutes or “request this book”.

If you select the option to “read this book” you will be given a 5 minute preview, after which a box will pop up with a form where you can request a rental to continue reading the ebook.

Fill in the form (selecting your desired loan period) and click “Request Book”.

You will receive an email with the outcome of your request with a link to the ebook.

Please note: Rental requests are approved by library staff (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) so you will experience a delay for rentals requested in the evening or on the weekend.

You may also access your ebook rental via your “Bookshelf” from the top menu on Proquest Ebook Central.
