eBooks: VLeBooks

A guide to using the library's eBook collections.

VLeBooks

The library offers some content via the VLeBooks platform.  No login is needed if you are using a campus PC, but off-campus you will need to log in via Shibboleth using your campus username and password (i.e. the password you use for email and the VLE).

After logging in you will be taken to a description page about the eBook. You will see a clickable option to Read Online, and in most cases you will also have the option to download the eBook.

Occasionally you will see the option Preview instead of Read Online. In these cases click on Preview and the book will open.

After a preview of 5 mins or 50 pages (whichever occurs soonest) the following pop-up will appear saying "Page limit reached".

Click "Ok" then select the "Request Access" button.

The full eBook will then be available and the Read Online and Download buttons will appear.

Read Online mode

In Read Online mode you can scroll between pages with the down arrow on your keyboard, or by using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the screen. You can also navigate within the book by clicking on the Contents options on the left hand side of the screen, using the Search option to find a particular word or phrase, or by typing a page number into the box above the page.

The +/- buttons in the top right hand corner can be used to zoom in and out. The colour wheel icon can be used to adjust the background colour.

Printing from VLeBooks

VLeBooks Read Online mode will allow you to print a limited proportion of the eBook by clicking on the “Print” button on the right hand side of the screen. A window will open displaying your print allowance for that book. You can then enter the page range you wish to print.

Copying from VLeBooks

VLeBooks Read Online mode will allow you to copy a limited proportion of the eBook by clicking on the “Copy” button on the right hand side of the screen. You can then choose to select an area of text, or copy an entire page to your clipboard.

Using the notes feature on VLeBooks

You can make notes on a VLeBook using the “Add notes” button in the bottom left hand corner of the page. You can review your notes in the tab on the left hand side of the screen.

Under the “Notes” button on the right hand side of the screen there are options to Export your notes as a text file, or Share your notes with a fellow student/staff member. The Share option generates an access code, which the other person can enter in the Import box to receive your notes.

Downloading VLeBooks on a PC or MAC

To download a VLeBook on a PC or MAC, you will need to install a program called Adobe Digital Editions, and create a free account called Adobe ID when prompted. Adobe Digital Editions can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html

Once you have installed Adobe Digital Editions on your PC/MAC, select the download option on the description page. A pop-up window will appear asking you how many days you would like to download the eBook for. In most cases there is an option to download for up to 3 days, although some eBooks many have shorter download periods.

You will be taken to a page telling you that your eBook download link is being generated. Once the link appears, select “Click here to download”.

If this does not work, go into the “Account” option at the top of the screen. You can then download your eBook from within the “Current Downloads” tab.

The downloaded eBook should automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions. If this does not happen launch Adobe Digital Editions, click “File / Add to Library” and find the eBook within your computer’s downloads folder (change the file type from "E-books" to "Adobe Content Server Message"). You will be prompted to create an Adobe ID account, or enter your login details if you already have an Adobe ID.

Please note: It is not possible to print or copy from the downloaded version of a VLeBook.
