Open access practice research journals and platforms

Open access journals are journals whose content are available free of charge and without restrictions immediately on publication. There are many interesting examples of practice researchers making their work available through emerging open access journals and platforms. A selection of these platforms and journals are listed below.


ArteActa a peer-reviewed open access journal for performative arts and artistic research.

Body, Space & Technology (BST) a leading open access journal of contemporary artistic practice and research that publishes research that engages with digital technologies.

Counterfield a journal produced by a PhD research collective based at Goldsmiths Visual Cultures department whose work intersects with multiple elements of practice-based research, with contributions ranging from essays and papers to images, diagrams and film scripts.

HUB — Journal of Research in Art, Design and Society a peer-reviewed open access research journal for reporting on arts, design, and performing arts.

Inscription: The Journal of Material Text – Theory, Practice, History a peer-reviewed open access journal featuring work by practitioners – book artists, printmakers and writers – alongside academic discussion. Creative content of each issue is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial License.

The International Journal of Creative Media Research an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed open access academic journal devoted to pushing forward the approaches to and possibilities for publishing creative media-based research.

Journal for Artistic Research (JAR) an open access peer-reviewed journal that disseminates artistic research from all disciplines.

The Journal of Embodied Research a peer-reviewed open access journal which focuses on the dissemination of embodied knowledge through the medium of video.

Journal of Sonic Studies an open access journal that presents multidisciplinary research on the sonic environment.

MAST (The Journal of Media Art Study and Theory) an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to interdisciplinary scholarship in media studies. The journal is committed to both theory and practice and accepts practice-based studies (1000-2000 words) and video essays.

Nordic Journal of Art & Research an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open-access journal aimed at disseminating knowledge and experience from research and development projects based on artistic practice and reflection, art education, art theory, cultural theory, and related areas. 

Open Screens the open-access journal of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies. It encourages innovative contributions from scholars of screen-based media and researcher-practitioners and publishes research-by-film-practice.

OAR: The Oxford Artistic and Practice Based Research Platform an online journal and research platform that engages with new ways of participating in knowledge production, specifically through practice research.

PARSE an international artistic research publishing platform.

Participatory City a transdisciplinary practice research project led by Tessy Britton at the Participatory City Foundation. Research narrative reports are hosted on the project website under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike licence.

REFRAME an open access academic digital platform for the practice, publication and curation of international research in media, arts and humanities.

RUUKKU - Studies in Artistic Research a multidisciplinary, multilingual, peer-reviewed journal on artistic research.

Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies a five-year research project exploring Africans’ contributions to contemporary screen worlds and audiovisual cultures that makes content available under a Creative Commons licence.

Screenworks an open access publication of practice research in film and screen media.
