Library Makerspace

This is the guide to the Library Makerspace

Binding machine

The binding machine can be used without a formal induction but we do ask that you read this short guide carefully and familiarise yourself with how it works. It's simple to use but do feel free to ask for guidance at the help desk if you have any queries.

Note: Thermal binding for dissertations is available at the library help desk.

1). Open the lid and raise the arm. Use the diagram to measure the size of the wire spine you will use.

You can purchase wire spines from the library help desk.

Tip: When setting the margins publication increase the left margin on the recto side by the width of your wire spine.

2) Adjust the dial on the right-hand side to match the size in millimetres of the wire spine.

3) Carefully arrange your sheets on the base of the machine and make a space to arrange them on the spine.

Insert the first few sheets and use the dial in the middle to hold them in place for hole punching.

The machine can take approximately 15 sheets of 80gsm (photocopier) paper at a time.

4) Firmly press the arm down to punch holes in your sheets.

5) Arrange your sheets on the wire spine and repeat.

6) When you've arranged your publication on the wire turn the spine to an upright 'U' position as pictured.

7) Open the inner lid and place your publication inside. Gently pull the lever towards you to press the spine closed. Don't close the spine too tight as the pages won't be able to turn.

Tip: If the spine is loose you can always tighten it but if the spine is too tight you have to unbind it and start again.
