Newspaper Collections: British Library Newspaper Collections

Newspapers and News Media

The British Library is home to the UK's news collections. It can provide researchers to access to newspapers as far back as the 1600s and it has growing collections of radio, television and online news.

Visit the News Media section of their website for information and guides on:

  • Newspapers (60 million newspapers)
  • British Newspaper Archive (14 million searchable pages, from more than 640 UK and Irish titles)
  • Television and radio news (onsite access to recent news programmes)
  • Web news (the Legal Deposit UK Web Archive includes millions of websites with UK domains)
  • Thomason Tracts (a key source for the English Civil War)
  • Burney Collection (largest available collection of 17th and 18th century newspapers)

 

British Library Newsroom

The British Library has a dedicated newsroom at St Pancras for newspapers, broadcast and online news. Researchers can access microfilm, print and digital newspapers. To visit the newsroom and access these resources, you require a Reader Pass. Information on how obtain a Reader Pass is available here.

Opening hours for the newsroom are:

Mon: 10.00-20.00

Tue-Thu: 09.30-20.00

Fri-Sat: 09.30-17.00

Sun and Public Holidays: Closed.
