Monographs, edited collections and book chapters were outside the scope of the open access requirements for REF 2021, but it is expected that the policy for the next research evaluation exercise (REF 2028) will include an open access requirement for long-form publications. It is expected that any formal open access requirements for monographs, edited collections and book chapters will be more flexible than the requirements for journal articles and should not apply retrospectively to titles published before any new policy is announced.
